Purpose
This policy aims to:
● Support an environment at Te Aroha Swim Club that is safe and healthy for all.
● Provide a clear process for proactively identifying, reducing, and eliminating hazards and
risks to health and safety at Te Aroha Swim Club.

Values
Te Aroha Swim Club is committed to:
● Providing a safe and healthy environment for everyone on its premises.
● Protecting people from harm as far as reasonably practicable.
● Identifying and addressing health and safety hazards quickly and thoroughly.

We believe that maintaining a safe and healthy environment is everyone’s responsibility,
acknowledging that individuals have different roles and responsibilities.

Application
This policy applies to anyone involved in Te Aroha Swim Club, including:
● Volunteers
● Participants
● Supporters
● Club members

● Contractors/service providers
● Families/whānau of participants

Appointment of Health and Safety Officer
At least one member of Te Aroha Swim Club will be appointed as the Health and Safety Officer.
This person will be responsible for:
● Updating and maintaining the Hazard Identification Register, particularly at the start of
each season.
● Ensuring a copy of the Hazard Identification Register is kept on site.
● Ensuring incident reporting forms are available on site, and are reviewed regularly
● Reporting hazards, incidents and near misses at each committee meeting

Health and Safety Responsibilities
Everyone must:
● Take reasonable care of their own health and safety
● Ensure their actions or inactions do not negatively affect others
● Identify and report hazards, near misses, and incidents using the appropriate forms
● Participate in any required health and safety training
● Follow this Health and Safety Policy

The Committee/Board will:
● Provide and maintain a safe and healthy environment at Te Aroha Swim Club
● Ensure all premises, equipment, and activities meet relevant standards
● Appoint at least one Health and Safety Officer
● Include health and safety as a standing agenda item at meetings

● Ensure safe working practices among employees, volunteers, contractors, members and
family
● Provide all necessary information, training, and supervision to minimise risk
● Take action on reported incidents, near misses, and identified hazards
● Create opportunities for volunteers, members and their family to raise health and safety
concerns and suggest improvements

Employees and Volunteers will:
● Prioritise health and safety in all activities
● Supervise children/young people under their care
● Understand what good health and safety practice looks like in the context of swimming
and aquatic activities

Contractors will:
● Comply with all relevant regulations, legislation, and codes of practice
● Inform the Health and Safety Officer of any hazardous materials, equipment, or
substances brought onto club premises
● Report all incidents and near misses using the Incident Reporting Form
● Use required safety equipment and clothing to minimise risk

Emergency Procedures
The committee has members with current first aid certificates who will respond to any
emergency. There is also a defib machine kept in the staffroom if needed.
Ring 111 for all emergencies.
In the event of a fire evacuate - the evacuation point is on the field side of the pavilion.

Reporting a Breach
To report a breach of this policy, individuals should follow the Complaints Policy and Procedure
of Te Aroha Swim Club. All reports will be taken seriously and handled in accordance with the
club’s complaint resolution process.
